Day 3: From a Studious Morning to The Studios of Hollywood

Greetings everyone and welcome back to the 2024 Math and the Mouse Blog! Today's post will be coming from yours truly, Virginia and Tyler. We spent time in class, worked on group projects, then ventured to Hollywood studios for some late afternoon fun!

The day commenced with a lovely breakfast provided by our hotel; we then jumped into class promptly at 8:30. Today, we learned how to visualize data on a software called Tableau! This was a great chance to be creative and learn how to best communicate and display our data by making charts and scatterplots from our Excel work yesterday.

Project Time

We then split into our 6 groups, which are separated by color (red, blue, yellow) within each team (Donald and Pluto) to work on our projects throughout the rest of the morning and early afternoon. Each group’s objective is to optimize the best location within the Magic Kingdom to place a Mickey Bar stand (yum!) at different time intervals throughout the day. Today, most groups worked on finding coordinates based on wait times (measuring population density) at popular ride locations. Here are our group project updates!

Virginia: My team, featuring Ellis and Will who you’ve heard from in previous blogs, is the red group for team Donald. Our project is focused on the upper left corner of Magic Kingdom. Today, we worked on finding coordinates for our Mickey Bar by weighting the coordinates of each ride with the wait time (multiplying them) to find the areas with the greatest concentration of people. Through Excel, we minimized the distance between the available side walk locations (called grids) and our calculated coordinates, based on the weighted values mentioned above, for each time slot. We mapped out those final locations on Tableau, the software we explored this morning! Our group is having fun working together and we’ve enjoyed learning new concepts and strategies as we go!

Tyler: My group and I - Team red, Group Pluto - are recursively finding the optimal location to place our Mickey Bar Cart between attractions within the upper, left section of the Magic Kingdom (i.e. Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, Thunder Mountain, etc.). To wit, we have found a method to deciphering the ideal location to place our cart of Mickey bars using a point of reference and minimizing that point to it’s precisest value, and using that value as our optimal coordinate. To do this effectively, we divided our work-load so that we each do this process 17 times to account for 53 time slots throughout the day, 9am-10pm.

Excursion to Hollywood Studios!

After a morning of hard work, we packed up the vans and headed to Hollywood Studios for some fun! We "warmed up" with the Star Tours ride before daring to take on the infamous Tower of Terror.

After recovering from that, we spent the rest of our afternoon exploring the glories of Hollywood Studios during free time and riding as many rides as we could! Today, we were able to maximize our time with lightning lane status and made it to Smuggler's Run, Runaway Railway, Slinky Dog Dash, and many more. Rise of the Resistance and the Tower of Terror were some group favorites. As Ellis so beautifully worded it, many of us felt as though the final Rise of the Resistance ride "had a bit of everything: it told a story, took you on a journey, and provided some twists, turns, and jumps that kept you on your toes." Below are a few of the amazing attractions we got to see today!

Final Thoughts

Overall, today was a productive and fulfilling day of adventuring, conquering fears, and learning. We appreciate you for tuning in!

Signing off,
Tyler and Virginia :)
