Greetings family and friends! I am Tyler Pearson, a rising Junior at Furman University who is pursuing a double major in Applied Mathematics and Spanish, with a minor in linguistics. I was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. I do not often have the opportunity to travel outside of the state, so I am interested to experience what the change in scenery will be like in Florida. After undergraduate school, I plan to attend graduate school to obtain my doctorate degree in mathematics. Also, as it pertains to on-campus involvement, I am a member and the treasurer of the Gospel Ensemble, the secretary of the new-found Sink or Swim pool club, and the newly appointed vice president of FU's First-Generation Student Alliance.
My interest in choosing to participate in the "Math and The Mouse" MayX program stems from longing for knowledge, particularly mathematical knowledge. There is a myriad of information with which I am unfamiliar that exists in the field of mathematics. I may never be able to familiarize myself with all that encapsulates the field, considering how expansive the subject is; however, attending this MayX program places me one step closer to math. I was ecstatic to learn that in this program we will be introduced to topics in Data Analytics, Optimization Modeling and Algorithms - which are all subfields of Applied Mathematics. As an aspiring mathematician who intends to specialize in the application of mathematics to other fields, I was intrigued because I will have to opportunity to not only satisfy my fascination with math, but also the opportunity to become more effectively apt within the applied realm of mathematics.
Aside from mathematics, I am also immensely excited to experience Disney World for the first time. I have heard many accounts of the famous Hollywood Studios, where all the magic happens, and seen beautiful photographs of the Magic Kingdom growing up so I am thrilled to finally check going to Disney World off the bucket list. The attraction that I am most anxious to see is the Animal Kingdom, specifically because I would like to ride the Avatar Flight of Passage. For starters, I love animals and nature; I find the beauty and abundance in nature to be easeful, and rather pleasant to the soul. Disney has a way of evoking such a sublime experience through ethnic culture, architectural designs, and fluorescent colors. I remember being in awe as a child seeing the first Avatar movie when it was released in 2009. I was six years old, and I adored the overall aesthetic and tranquil vehemence of the setting the avatar species was living in, so I am looking forward to visiting Pandora as well.
I foresee a laudable trip filled with insights and growth, and I am eager to embark on this journey with the Mathematics Department at Furman.
