For me, this experience is more than just an academic opportunity. Growing up in Vietnam, where there is no Disney park, visiting Disney has always felt like a distant childhood dream. Being able to experience it now while also learning how mathematics is used behind the scenes makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me.
In a way, this experience brings together two parts of my life that I never expected to connect. It allows me to revisit the curiosity and excitement I had as a child, while also approaching it with a new perspective as a college student studying mathematics.
Over the next three weeks at Disney World, I hope to engage with both sides of this experience. On one hand, I am looking forward to enjoying some of the most iconic attractions, such as TRON Lightcycle / Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Avatar Flight of Passage, as well as trying classic Disney foods like Dole Whip, churros, and turkey legs. On the other hand, I am equally excited to observe how mathematics is embedded in the park - from ride design and motion physics to crowd flow and wait-time optimization.
To me, there is something special about learning in a place that is also so personally meaningful. This experience is not just about seeing Disney World, but about understanding it in a deeper way through the lens of mathematics.
