Welcome to the Math and the Mouse blog for 2024! My name is Jacob, and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. I chose Furman University because of how strong the academic scene was, as well as how nice the campus and the people were. I fell in love with mathematics and the department after interacting with incredible professors and driven students in the classes I took. I have participated in many activities around the department, including Dins and Dogs, a program that connects Berea Middle School students with problems in STEM, the Mathematics Student Advisory Board, which helps plan fun student activities, and department sticker designing, where I worked with Dr. Bouzarth to create stickers for the mathematics department. In the upcoming months, I will be participating in both Math and the Mouse and combinatorics research with Dr. Stadnyk and Dr. Lacina. This fall, I will be entering my senior year!
Math and the Mouse is going to be a pivotal point in helping me decide where I want to go in life and what I want to do. One of the career options that I have recently taken an interest in is themed entertainment design. For the MSAB this previous fall, I helped design an escape room event filled with fun and challenging puzzles. This has inspired me to consider a career that focuses on the complexity of keeping people entertained. By attending this MayX, I hope to gain insights on the logistics behind how one of the largest entertainment brands operates.
I have not been to Disney since I was four. As such, I am slightly unfamiliar with what the parks have to offer. Regardless, I am a very big fan of theme parks in general. I have enjoyed frequent trips to HersheyPark when I lived up in Baltimore, and I know this excitement for roller coasters and rides will carry over. Of the four parks, I would say that Animal Kingdom interests me the most.
In addition, I want to express how excited I am to go on this trip with some of the absolute best people I have ever met! It really feels like a village with how well we have gotten to know each other before this event, especially after the night that we met up in G Pavillion to play games. Everyone is super kind and caring, and we have a really funny crew without a doubt. I am excited for all the memories, photos, and quotes that will come out of this trip!
Let's make it our goal to have this be the best Math and the Mouse ever - I am super excited to go on this trip with everyone, and I hope that everyone following the blog will enjoy the stories all the same!
